I read an interesting article this morning that compares the High Definition DVD capabilities of the Sony PS3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360. The author does well at presenting the positive, negative and neutral aspects of each player while providing relevant insight into each of these players.
I will be putting both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 add-on through their paces to see how much high-def power is really under their well-designed, uber-sleek hoods.

I do not own a PS3 as of this moment, but I do however own the HD DVD add-on for the 360 that I picked up at release a couple weeks back. I am very impressed with the quality of the HD DVD drive for the 360 and for me it was a budget minded way of getting into High Definition movies given I already owned a 360 to begin with. The integration of the HD-DVD into the 360 is seamless and works perfectly with the platform, turning it into a true HD multimedia experience. One that is further enhanced by the recent release of the Video Marketplace which offer HD downloads of movies and television shows.
With all the hoopla revolving around the latest format war this article presents some relevant information with regards to Sony and Microsoft’s entries into this dawning battle for HD dominance. Unfortunately I feel this format war is only going to hinder the adoption of either format as the popularity of standard DVD’s currently is and will continue to be prevalent for quite some time. Will one format win over the other as in previous format wars or will both remain and become viable in the home video market? Time will tell, but according to the DVD Forum, HD DVD is the next generation of DVD and the new standard for High Definition video.
The interesting thing is that Sony is a member of the DVD Forum and yet chose to potentially hinder both formats by introducing Blu-ray into the market. Their track record for proprietary formats has not been all that great and to me it seems as though combining efforts and coming to terms on a single next-gen format would have been far more beneficial. I know the attempt was made to do this and in the end it failed and the results of this failure are as yet to be determined.
I guess that is enough of my ranting about the HD format war and now back to the article from High-Def Digest. Checkout the article over on the “In the Spotlight” section and feel free to chime in with your input with regards to the format war and what you think of HD DVD and Blu-ray. Do you have the PS3 or the HD DVD add-on? Do you own other players for one or both of these formats? Please share your experiences if so inclined.
