Yesterday was the big day as Gears of War was released and “Emergence Day” was finally realized by gamers everywhere or almost everywhere, as the game will be hitting retailers throughout the coming week. I was able to spend some quality time with the game last night as a friend and I began to tackle the coop campaign that just has to be played to be appreciated fully. This is a no-holes-barred game where run and gun will get you no where fast, but where teamwork and a little luck will draw you into this visceral gaming experience. There is still much more to accomplish as we have only made it through Act 1 in the game and I see a few late nights in our future finishing up the campaign mode.
The reviews are in and Gears is one of the most critically acclaimed games yet for the 360 and in my opinion is completely deserving of the fanfare.
Gears of War is truly a breakthrough: The absolute finest game of its kind. The bar has definitely been raised. What Halo did for first-person shooters, Gears does for third person - it’s that good.

There is a healthy learning curve to the cover system, but those who master it will find Epic’s twisting and turning and rolling an exciting change-up in the shooter genre, a blend of fast-arcade action and basic, tactical maneuvering. The Insane difficulty level gives Gears legs months after you’ve finished the relatively-short campaign, and even with a friend it is an impossible, irresistible challenge.
- IGN
This is a huge title for the 360 without a doubt and worth the purchase price by far and I am quite sure it will even sell more systems on it’s own as word of mouth brings Gears to the masses. The game has been a long time coming, but for me it has been completely worth the wait. If you’re looking for an incredible next-gen experience than look no further as Gears raises the bar and adds to a well established line up of quality games on the 360.
